Asking to think “WE” instead of me the United Way of Acadiana held its 7th annual ‘Day of Action’. This event in past years has been held on the first Friday of the summer, but because summer started on a Saturday this year, it was extended for extra action day to two.

The Day of Action had more than 500 volunteers participating in teaching children life skills: reading activities with children in summer camps, teaching children about money in Budget Buddy courses, creating personal hygiene kits, gardening, sorting food and more. The United Way told KATC “That it is about the community helping the community. We cant do it alone. We have to have the volunteers willing to help and get plugged in not only today but 365 days a year.”

The ‘Day of Action’ does not only consist of children; local businesses, government workers, church groups, students and local civic groups also join forces to bring about positive change. This diverse group of people are involved in activities in the community to help clean, paint and plant flowers around Acadiana as well. The boys and girls clubs, Opelousas Lighthouse Mission, and the United Way Office all got face lifts during this project.
