Erath Water Fights

The Erath 4th of July Celebration has welcomed people from all around Acadiana for 68 years. One of the highlights of the celebration is the Firefighter Water Fights.

Four departments, Delcambre, Henry, Erath, and Leblanc, come together for this water war. The winner takes home a trophy, the boot axe, and most importantly, bragging rights for the year. Since the water fight began, so has the friendly competition, with intense rivalries between the departments.

There’s no rivarly more intense than the one between neighboring stations Leblanc and Erath.

Firefighter, Kyle Toups, of the Erath Fire Department told KATC the water games are the biggest bragging right there is for them. Winning for them means being top dog.

“We train together, go on call together, they are in our back yard so this is a big deal. We trash talk year around about who is going to win,” says Toups.

Leblanc Fire Chief, Ronald Broussard, said, “This is the chance to take it to the streets. It is the most intense competition there is between the four departments. Our biggest rival is Erath.”

This year, the competition was tough. A round is the best two out of three and each round was decided by three.

The finals were decided between Erath and Leblanc. Leblanc, the reigning champs, prevailed over the hometown heros.

This was the fifth year for the Leblanc Fire Department to take home the grand prize, as well as have another year of bragging rights over Erath. The Water Fight was dedicated to their fallen brother in arms, Deputy Allen Bares, Junior.
