Abbeville’s Mascot is one of a Kind

Abbeville High School’s mascot “Willie Wild” is one of a kind.

Senior Aaron Dartest, a student with Down Syndrome, decided he wanted to be more involved with his school. Having a love for dancing, his mom, Cynthia, met with Principal Ivy Landry to see how to help her son.

“Everyone was great! They all wanted to help find a spot for him,” said Cynthia Dartest, Aaron’s mother.

“We even thought about putting him on the dance team,” said Abbeville High School Principal Ivy Landry.

Becoming Willie Wild was perfect for Aaron because of his amazing spirit, Principal Ivy stated. He gets to dance all of his favorite dances in front of the Abbeville fans.

That’s something his mom says is his favorite part of the week.

“I have always told him he can do anything he sets his mind to. We want to focus on his abilities and not his disabilities. Dancing is one thing that brings him joy,” says Dartest.

Cynthia also said that October is Down Syndrome Awareness month and thanks everyone who has been so kind to her son.
