The Atlanta Braves starting rotation has been decimated with injuries. Brandon Beachy out with a sore shoulder, Mike Minor yet to play a spring training game, and both on the disabled list. Now, in risk of loosing their opening day starter, Kris Medlen,  for the season due to ligament damage. What are the Braves going to do?

Sign 33-year-old right-handed pitcher Ervin Santana!

Two weeks left in Spring Training and Free Agent Ervin Santana is a Free Agent no more. The Braves and Santana have come to a one-year $14.1 million dollar deal. Braves staff relieved to have signed Santana and know he will be a key to the starting rotation.

“In light of what has happened over the past few days with our pitching staff, we felt it was incumbent on us to do everything we could to strengthen our starting pitching.” Braves general manager  Frank Wren.

“This guy makes our rotation a lot better than where we are at now. We lost Medlen and Beachy in a matter of  2 1/2 days and he went out there and got the best pitcher available for us.” Manager Fredi Gonzalez said praising Wren.

Going out to get a starting pitcher is what Wren called an “incredible decision by the organization”, especially since it puts payroll over the 100 million dollar limit. Also they lose their first-round pick in June’s  amateur draft, No. 26, and the Royals will get the 28th overall pick as a compensation-round selection. Now the Braves first 2014 draft pick will be the 32nd overall, as compensation for losing free agent Brian McCann to the Yankees.
